As an amateur in regard to church history, I appreciate Gonzalez' approach. The book is accessible and reads like a coherent story. It's about religion, but it doesn't neglect the role material factors like economics played in the development of church history.

The book doesn't offer a deep look at anything. It's a survey. With the exception of folks like Martin Luther, most characters and events don't receive more than a few pages of attention.
