I'm trying, I'm really really trying, but McElroy is just not clicking for me. I'll keep working through his catalog until something gives because I want to at least say I like his writing before starting his 1200 page opus. I have Ancient History, Cannonball, and Hind's Kidnap on my shelf if anyone has a recommendation for which may help me begin to appreciate McElroy.

Of those three I'd Ancient History is the most accessible, Hind's the most rewarding, and I fizzled out with Cannonball after 150 pages...

Yea I was thinking Ancient History would be my next. I’ve heard great things about HK but 600 pages is a big commitment with McElroy haha. I’m really intent on getting to a place where I can enjoy his writing style because I feel like it’s something that I should love based on what I value in a writer
Thing is, he has no intention of entertaining... I even remember a comment where he said that he admired Pynchon, but wondered if he was too concerned with entertaining (paraphrasing).
