I always thought "self love" and "positive affirmations" were dumb, and cringe. As I've been Sarah's thoughts, I've been slowly realizing that I think I've been totally straw-manning the concepts.

She doesn't talk about "self love" but instead of the importance of self compassion, and I much prefer her terminology. I think it communicates more precisely the sort of intentionality we should regard ourselves with.

Esther Hallel whoah you're so far
also I agree 💯

Esther Hallel also it's really interesting I think its dan allender that writes about his work with trauma counselees where he actually refuses for them to talk about the traumatizing incident with him if they aren't yet capable of a level of self compassion. I'm not very familiar with this part but he says it's to avoid retraumatization, or essentially hurting themselves even worse. It's interesting

Anna ahh wow, that is really interesting. I ran out of characters so I had to keep my comments short, but I felt a shift in my opinion of affirmations as well. Not all affirmations seem helpful to me, but the concept itself of reminding yourself of true things feels very valuable, in of itself.

also heh, i just finished the book. gonna write a full review tomorrow maybe

Anna Also, she does later also use "self love" terminology, which is okay; but I still prefer "self compassion" terminology, haha.

Esther Hallel affirmations aren't bad yeah

Esther Hallel I think I prefer affirmations that are realistic and not trying to change reality

Esther Hallel and not vague
