Brilliant chapter on Daniel Deronda.

Skipped the Felix Holt chapter and will return to it after reading Felix in June.

The Middlemarch chapter is so good. I love how Uglow includes in-depth discussions of the novels in her biographies. She does this with Gaskell’s biography too.

Very interesting and insightful exploration of The Mill on the Floss.

Excellent chapter on Adam Bede!

"Eliot suggests that although a pattern may be imprinted indelibly by nature, if people see their desires and emotions clearly enough they need not be trapped by their feelings but can subordinate them to other demands from outside--such as loyalty, duty, or responsibility to others" (140-141).
