2/24 the break in is the tensest I’ve been reading in a while; this really is a forerunner to Peele’s Us. Also the way he describes time passing (p1 and 137 especially) is so righteously angry; it’s all about viewing it through the lens of actions/movements of systems oppressing (including the Santa Ana winds) and how eagerly the people of Watts accept it. Carter had stocked the bar the way conservationists stock a lake with trout. There was Johnnie Walker Red, Chivas Regal, Jack Daniel's, imported Nebbiolo Cinzano, Jamaican rum, Tia Maria liqueur, crème de cacao, and Beefeater's gin. He bought a generous supply of Seagram's V.O., Courvoisier cognac, Canadian Club whiskey, Akadama red wine, and several cases of Miller High Life.

David That being said there’s also the whiplash of three pages of conversation where an electrical expert (who was described in his introduction with the r-word) is actually so smart that he’s unable to simplify his technobabble dialogue to the point that the rest of the characters (who are a doctor, an ex-military engineer, a non-violence social activist, and a man that used to help America overthrow governments) are ready to throw hands while yelling at him to speak English in a way that Chris Tucker would find excessive, so it’s also weirdly a bit of a forerunner to (Key &) Peele’s sketch work as well.
