Halfway through the plot got a lot more interesting. And, gosh, Elm has so much more personality and character than Ravyn.

There are too many adjectives and not enough action. Ravyn's personality is having no personality. Everyone's far too often speaking in rhymes and fiddling cards. Not even sure what the cards do, because they're mostly only talked about and not used in any meaningful way. The storyworld is a bit incohesive. Waiting for some purpose.

So it's basically like Stephanie Garber's "Caraval". Also, everyone is far too often talking in rhymes and carrying cards in their pockets. The card system is a little strange. Still not sure what they even do, but everyone keeps talking about them.
The romance is meh.

I seem to miss the central conflict of this book. Is there any or am I just reading it for the sake of the atmospheric setting? There are no urgent stakessss. Gimme stakessss. Gimme urgency. Gimme some personality for characters.
