I love her explanation of the differences between "People Who Have Pets" and "Pet People." Very true!

I love this line from the book (about 49% through), when she is talking about being surprised at how sad she feels that a mouse she was caring for died. "I realize that no matter how small or insignificant a pet might seem, the time and concern spent in caring for it is a great equalizer, and loss is loss." Very true and well said!

To paraphrase the author, the first group has pets but the pets are just there and sometimes they aren't there permanently. The second group are the ones who believe that their pets are part of the family and treat them as such. She makes the comment that she can't understand how some people who live with pets don't realize that they are sentient beings with thoughts and emotions. By the way, I'm sure you know which group I fall into!!! :)
