At this point I know for certain Rebecca West is one of the most intelligent people I've ever read, and her prose is just ridiculously beautiful and capable of painting pictures. I don't mind taking my time with this monster at all.

Dudes! I've wanted to read this for a long time soley based upon it's spine sitting on my library bookshelf. (I work there so I saw it everyday.) The spine was the sea-foam green of my favorite imprint Penguin Twentieth Century Classics, and it was FAT. 1181 pages fat. I knew this must be for me. But a non-fiction fatty?
