Preface;
- this is about dogma, not the intracicies between denominational doctrine
- though we don't know the hearts of those around us, or their 'spiritual standing', we need to preserve the word Christian so that it doesn't come to just mean a 'good person' but rather maintain the origin of it being a 'Christ follower'

- Christianity doesn't begin in a place of comfort, it begins in dismay and over the long run becomes a comfort.
- searching for truth will get you there, searching for comfort will not

- good doesn't mean soft, sympathetic, or indulgent
- the source behind the universe and the laws of human nature must be absolute goodness?
- C.S.Lewis is really using this essay to slow down and be sure the reader understands what's been covered and not to jump ahead to God, let alone the Christian God

- The Life-force idea of evolution is a kind of tame God; all the thrill of religion with none of the cost
- "Something is directing the universe, and which appears in me as a law urging me to do the right thing and make me feel responsible/ uncomfortable when I do wrong."

- what we out to do vs. what we in fact do
- we can all agree that humanity is not as it should be and can come up with very similar notions of what it should be
- "a real law, which none of us made, but we find pressing on us."

- "You might think love of humanity in general was safe, but it's not. If you leave out justice you will find yourself breaking agreements and faking evidence in trials 'for the sake of humanity', and become in the end a cruel and treacherous man."
- we inharantly measure against a 'real morality', not just our own or our society's morals

- "the moral law tells us the tune we have to play; our instincts are merely the keys."
- impulses aren't inharantly good or bad, but we shouldn't pick one and choose to follow it at all costs.

1.
- The law of human nature; an innate sense of right vs. wrong/ fair play
- Of all of the sets of laws we are subject to, this is the only one we can choose to violate AND it's one that we have that separates us from animals
- a difference in morals doesn't seem to go against these laws
- many of us struggle to abide by the laws of human nature, no one is perfect

Preface;
- "When you have reached your own room, be kind to those who have chosen different doors and to those who are still in the hall. If they are wrong they need your prayers all the more, and if they are your enemies, then you are under orders to pray for them. That is one of the rules common to the whole house."
