The prose is *so* beautiful and the story is *so* compelling. I'd forgotten how funny the author is. And it strikes me that, right off the bat, there's an immediate sense of "wrongness" for us American readers in that, for those in the antipodes, Valentine's Day is a late summer holiday.....

Want to finish tonight but I'm just too tired. Also, I'm wondering how accurate the text is in the Penguin Classics ebook—sometimes the paragraph breaks and absent commas feel like the victims of poor OCR text conversion (there have been a few definite hyphenation errors that I've noticed).

What a weird novel....and looking like a new favorite.
