The chapter "thoughts on Japanese animation", from a lecture given nearly 30 years ago, is a sharp critique to the state of Japanese society overall. In a society accustomed to patterns and seen creativity stifled in the name of monetary productivity, animation in Japan has stagnated for far too long from the perspective of Hayao Miyazaki. 30 years later, Miyazaki would probably still agree.
