The essential argument whenever Raffi goes into his nationalist platitudes is “Armenians are weak because they let the Turkish and Kurdish bully them.” Ew. I also hate the generalizations he makes about Armenians, his own people! But the story itself is interesting and a major page-turner

I really don’t love the nationalist narratives. But I do love the intersections with Fanon and Malcolm X. The vibe is “self defense by any means necessary.” But damn, not loving the victim-blaming.

Quite enjoying this translation! Though I’m not a fan of its origins as an early nationalist novel and it’s social dawinism, the story is majorly filled with tea!!!! And surprising nuances relating to gender. It’s cool to read about life in Ottoman villages in the 1870s. I have no idea where this story will go. I’m not a fan of the idea that Armenians are fools for “letting” themselves be pillaged and plundered tho
