If you weren’t following him, your grandfather was holding you. His friends would tease him, asking when and where he learned to hold a baby like that. He’d laugh and say it was the war that taught him. He’d say, because holding an AK-47, a bazooka, a machine gun, holding any weapon in the bush had always felt like holding a life—either one that would be taken in battle, or the one to survive.
