I just don't get these characters who get inexplicably turned on my the most benign circumstances. Like they are trying out new Lonely Island lyrics a la, "I open the window and a breeze rolls in and I--🥴"

Seriously, some are just as bad.
"She shifted her weight and stretched out her leg and I-🥴"
I don't know if straight romance is actually the worse offender, or if I just notice it more.

He started to stand but she pressed down and nodded at his long legs. Sighing, he swung them to the side and let her slide past him.
Garrick did the same without being asked.
Yes, the training was definitely starting to take.

I-- Why don't you just let them do whichever they want to do?? Yes, I get that traditionally men stand to let others pass in a row of chairs, and women move their knees, but who the fuck cares?

Oh no, Sleazy character can't just be a regular scumbag. He has to be a bad skater as well. And... unpünktlich!

fruitbatwoman I can barely read straight romance these days, and this is one of the reasons why >_>

message 2: by Mel (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mel I know, I rarely bother with it these days because of stuff like this. More disappointing than not.

I was looking for more mm hockey romance, specifically written by a hockey fan, which this author is. But the series starts with mf. (-_-;) Still, I decided to chance it to get to know the cast of characters. On the plus side, it turned out to be a bi relationship (yay bi rep!), but yeah... the gender dynamics put me off.
- Sexual harassment and assault as a plotline
- The male MC having to "convince" her she's beautiful

I think I may still try the author's mm books to see if I like them better.

(BTW - good luck with your move! I regret I lost my window of opportunity to visit you in Iceland, but I guess I'll have to change up my hypothetical travel plans. ^_^ )

Precisely that! I feel the dynamic in queer romance is usually much more balanced, and has less harmful tropes - of course there are exceptions too, but it general. Hopefully the other books will be more enjoyable for you :)

(Thanks a lot! You can always come visit in Denmark - but don't leave it for 10 years again ;)
