We need people around us to remember who we were, to help piece everything together for us. Without them, we cease to exist for long periods. There is a danger that when you are alone no one can confirm who you are for that period. You have no alibi for your existence. No one can tell a story about you.

So glad to see that you are reading this Ilse:) my copy just arrived not too long ago, I am currently on vacation but plan to get to it as soon as I am back home !

Daisyread, it took the book quite a while to arrive here, having some bumpy adventures before it did, and I have been waiting for the perfect moment to read it for a few months - now we are having this long weekend of four days of freedom, I am happy I can finally give it all the attention it deserves (even if my son seems to have other plans with his mother's time :)). Great to know that you'll give it a go soon as well, enjoy your vacation!
