کاکس با مهارت تمام در بیست و خورده‌ای صفحه، تاریخچه‌ای از کشفیاتی میگه که منجر به شکل‌گیری جغرافیای زیستی شد. اهمیتش هم در اینه که بهت این امکان رو میده که متون حالا کلاسیک رو در ظرف زمانی خودشون ببینی.

خودش هم یه جا میگه که فکر نکنید این آدم‌هایی که حالا نظراتشون ناکافی و منسوخ شدن، آدم‌های ابله‌تر یا کم‌هوش‌تری بودن... مساله اینه ما در هر دوره‌ای، داریم براساس پارادایم‌های زمانه‌ خودمون می‌اندیشیم.
