Lovely writing, but the first story is meandering in a way that stirs DNF thoughts.

"Together with her mother, both of them tense with worry lest things should somehow go wrong, Theresa had seen him through the right college, into the right fraternity, and though pursued by various girls and various mamas of girls, safely married to the right sort, however much in the early years of that match his wife, Anne, had not seemed to understand poor George."

Wow! Overwritten much?

Julia LOL @ stirring DNF thoughts! Sometimes I wonder if I am becoming too impatient and intolerant of meandering writing styles in my reading, but if I'm reading for enjoyment then why not focus on maximizing that? I hope your book picks up pace!

Was more generous with meandering prose in my youth? Perhaps. I had more time, and I hadn't made a career out of boiling everything down to be concise and directive.

I struggle with essays and short stories because they either feel to short (and bit pointless) or too long (and then why not write a book?!?).
