Unlike a preface to paradise lost, Jack assumes the reader is not just an educated student but an extremely well read student. Which I am not. I find myself having to stop and read short summaries of a variety of authors beyond the republic and timmaeus, as well as even more medieval works of Milton and Chaucer. He lists Lucan, Statius, claudian as if you know them well. Which I suppose his students would.
