I like the characters, the witty dialogue, and the romantic tension between the hero and heroine, but the premise behind the plot - he wants to build a canal through the area, she is opposed - is so boring. Every time it's brought up, my eyes glaze over.

I don't know what kind of grumpy mood I was in when I read this in 2016, but this book is delightful. Yes, the canal plot isn't the most interesting thing to hang a romance on, but it's really a historical MacGuffin giving the hero and heroine an opportunity to spar, flirt and be vulnerable with each other. And let's be real, that's the true point of the whole exercise. IOW, I was wrong before and am having fun now.

Evidently I’m in the mood to reread romance novels I was meh about a decade ago. So many people love this one that I figure it’s worth trying again.
