Liked most of this book so far but have some strong critiques of its chapter on empire – It fails to truly embrace the degree to which a colonized people can also influence the colonizer. The colonized may adapt the colonizer’s culture – but the inverse is also true, and this is left as subtext. I also think a section on empire as ‘not bad’ falls quite flat without any engagement in postcolonial studies.

Well said. I had to do a presentation on that chapter for a book club. I showed four videos: (1) Star Wars: our hero’s come upon the Death Star (2) Monty python and holy grail - exploiting the masses (3) Monty python and life of Brian - what did the Romans ever due for us (4) The girl can’t help it - little Richard song. To talk about how American culture became driven by the decedents of its enslaved peoples.
