Ok so this novel is mentally dark. We really go deep into Pilar's inner darkness that's been exacerbated by the tragedies she's survived. I can relate to her anger. A deep well of emotional pain that doesn't let up. Meanwhile she is bonding? a little with Lulu by helping her get a bit of payback for Gonzo(Lu's dog) & her quinceñera planning. Her Aunt dropped out 'cuz of asshole Julio's comments about his gay nephew.

Lulu's rebellion continues. Pilar goes through it. Lulu's dad's assholery also continues. Her Aunt's husband Charlie takes a page out of her brother's asshole booklet. Ernie & Lulu have the sex again - even though she really doesn't want a boyfriend which he thinks he is now. The quinceñera is looming as is the ceaseless planning reminders. Lulu never wanted one to start with anyway. More her dad's assholery.

Finally, Lulu meets Pilar and now we're back to 1951 Pilar after her personal tragedy.

Pilar told Jose about the old lady & her allegations. He denied of course & they went to the quienceñera. Pilar spends time at the church being envious of Dulce and thinking how she wished her dad had thrown her a party. She goes into Labor while dancing and telling herself that she & Jose will throw their daughter a fiesta just like Dulce's. They go to a Catholic hospital as it takes "Latinos". Snooty gringos.

Start off following Pilar's intro to Jose Alfredo Aguirre at a Mexican rodeo. She's the illegitimate child of her father's indiscretion and this rodeo trip is a birthday present. Jump to 1951 & they are married (Pilar & Jose) with a son, Joselito (so original) & another on the way. Some old lady confronts Pilar, saying Jose is her hubby, throws dirt in her face then leaves when she's told it's not Jose's house.
