author did a great job encapsulating online sub cultures and the people who participate. it was. small part of the book really but it was well done. it’s fucking awesome and exactly the kind of horror thriller that i like enjoy (though it’s low on the horror). i’m not an academic but the university aspects felt accurate. or at least melded well with the story so i couldn’t tell. i think the author is a nerd

like there’s some similarities to crichton imo. but this author does less faux science explaining than crichton and lets the story really tell the reader what’s going on from the pov of characters that are mostly career academics or students. i also love the camping aspect and all of it was accurate down to the brands of gear they used
