ok i restarted again yesterday but it clicked and now im almost done. this is like the 5th time i tried to start this book and it just wasn’t that engaging until yesterday

i’m not sure how much farther i’m into this tbh but i had to check how many freaking times the work freaking was used in place of fuck and it’s freaking 86 times in this book alone. the first book was also horrible for it. i’m actually going to scream i can’t take this EIGHTY SIX TIMES IN A FULLY ADULT ROMANCE BOOK

it’s worse than the first book and really suffers from the particular type of insufferable female lead that’s actually super was common in 2013

im also not loving the way sexual assault is being handled? It’s better than most but rn 25% in the fmc is like no guys i would have fought him off by outing my secret powers if i was actually afraid

literally from page 1 it’s like a made for tiktok book. weird out of place smut meant to draw in the “does it have spice?” girlies. but i was feeling horrible and i needed some shitty romance to forget about life. this was on he cusp of too awful to read tho. i think after like 75 pages it was tolerable and then the last 50 i wanted to die again and rage rate it a 1

drinn idk where i saw this but it was on a list and i went into it not reading the synopsis again. it i like it!! i think the author may be irish or did research because i always want to microwave my brain in irish and scottish romances cause the authors usually fuck it up

god the writing is so good

i went into this knowing nothing and while being in a bit of a reading slump. its actually great. i can always trust nenia

author did a great job encapsulating online sub cultures and the people who participate. it was. small part of the book really but it was well done. it’s fucking awesome and exactly the kind of horror thriller that i like enjoy (though it’s low on the horror). i’m not an academic but the university aspects felt accurate. or at least melded well with the story so i couldn’t tell. i think the author is a nerd

“coining a phrase “death by fox”” i’m sorry but 2.5x is too slow if im comprehending how fucking stupid that is

honestly this isn’t as good as the first book… somehow fox became super uninteresting and the dramatic music stuff just awful

idk it’s alright. i liked the idea of a more classic dragon fantasy with all the common tropes but redone in a modern way. but it often reads a bit cheesy and erring on the side of cringe at times.

it’s interesting because you don’t have a lot of sexism. the main char trains w/ a girl around his age and there’s like no description of her tits or luscious lips but you can kinda see a romance in later books

the last third was a lot more enjoyable than the rest of the book. but i didn’t try too hard to finish it quickly when it just wasn’t hitting. i think i was just in the mood today and that’s why i loved the last part so much. i really do love t.kingfishers writing and i probably should have put the book on hold when i first started so that i could have enjoyed the whole book.

lol im wondering if they’re going to make the us military out to be good guys for waging war on other counties in this alternate universe. cause the authors clearly bought into a certain amount of the military propaganda lol. like the common stuff you hear about the “bad side of war” like suicide rates in veterans and ptsd is just looked at so uncritically

it’s good. i’m not drawn in and obsessed but i’m working through it quite quickly so it’s enjoyable. fantasy as a genre can be hard for me sometimes because i love the idea of it but the execution doesn’t always enthrall me

it didn’t hook me right away but it’s written just as well as her other books. it’s t kingfishers most popular book on goodreads but idk i feel like i liked the other books more by this point but it’s not bad by any means. prob 4-4.5 at this point?

i was actually thinking this is going to be really good and thinking oh wow how didn’t i hear of this book earlier or more often. and then i got more than 15% in and it’s the most cookie cutter shit ever. it’s just a nothing burger of a book. and also the addition of fae was so lame why couldn’t he just be a wizard at least that would be unique for a 2023 release. i think im over romantic fantasy for now
