I don’t care about any of these characters. Gilda is very opaque despite her rhapsodic narrative voice. The setting could be anywhere. Very little to evoke NYC/the west side beyond name dropped streets. Nothing to evoke the 1920s—even an alternate history—except mention of gangs and bootleggers.

This is creepy and I’m liking it. But Gilda doesn’t quite feel real. There is nothing about her that makes it imperative she is a female detective. Or even this particular character. She could be anyone.

Something about this feels off… is it that Gilda is so angry?
