this book is so perplexing. I am completely indifferent to the plot, and as such I don't feel the urge to pick up the book and read. but at the same time, whenever I do start reading, it captures me, and despite my lack of interest in the plot, I find it hard to put the book down (while simultaneously wanting it to stop already???)

I think it's the sheer quality of the writing. Fitzgerald has a way with words.
