What do y'all do when someone comments on a book you've reviewed? I rated a book 3.5 stars which I marked at 4 since Goodreads doesn't do half-sies. A person read my review and fussed at me because I said I was lost (it was book 8 in the series and I hadn't read the first 7). I start series in the middle all the time and most of the time authors fill in the gaps and I'm not lost. I'm just a little erked right now.

Wendy'sThoughts Hey we all have been there when it is number whatever and we are either catching up or trying to remember. Sometimes the author gives just enough to refresh or sometimes too much. Your take on it is valid either way. Xoxo

N.D. Jennifer, here's my two cents. If a book is in a series and the books don't seem to be standalone reads, I pretty much assume I'm going to be lost if I pick it up in the middle. I've done this and, to a certain extent, I was right. There were characters and backstories I had no idea about. Unless a fact was truly pertinent to the plot, I didn't expect the author to waste a lot of time rehashing old stuff. But it also made the book less enjoyable because there were gaps for me as a reader. I just finished writing book two of my trilogy. As a trilogy, with the same main characters, I went to great lengths to provide enough info. from book one so a person jumping in with book two wouldn't feel so lost. I don't know how much of that I could do if I wrote a long series. It could become cumbersome and clog down the pacing of the current book. Just a thought. With that said, I've read similar comments, on Amazon., similar to the one you received. Personally, I dont comment on a reviewer's review, even if I disagree with their opinion. But many do, especially if a reviewer slams one of their favorite authors.

Magdalena I don't see how that's the person's problem since it's a reasonable situation to be lost if you haven't read the previous books and it's not a stand-alone.

Julie First off just let it go right over your head. What's it to them anyway? As far as rating... you can do whatever the hell you want! Now what I do, which I've always started with book #1 in a series but if you want to do what you did here again, I would at least SCAN the syp of the book BEFORE the one you want to read just checking ONLY FOR NAMES of at least the H or h because right there will tell you they belong together. (I never read the entire syp, just names because if another book belongs with it I DONT WANT TO RUIN what I have yet to read). If it's new names, there ya go. It may be other characters are carried over into it but if you don't want to read those you don't have to!
Your choice! ;D
