Is it a bad thing that I value prose over plot? When the writing is beautiful, I'm more inclined to overlook narrative flaws and simply savor the beautiful language. On the other hand, if the writing is poor, I find it hard to overlook and tend to be more critical of the story as a whole.

That being said, good writing significantly enhances the reading experience, allowing for a deeper connection with the story. Beautiful prose elevates the narrative, creating a richer and more immersive experience. With its rich descriptions and attention to detail, it makes settings and emotions feel more tangible and real, crafting a vivid atmosphere that draws readers into the world of the story and its characters.

Conversely, bad writing undermines the execution of a story. It can stifle a story’s potential, causing even the most captivating concepts to fall flat, making it less likely for readers to connect with the story or be moved by it.
As a huge mood reader, I find that beautiful prose makes a book memorable. I can appreciate the craft more deeply and discover fresh layers of meaning with each reread. But when I need escapism, a gripping plot provides that necessary temporary refuge 😆
I love literary fiction just as much as genre fiction, so I don't mind whether a book is plot-driven or not, as long as it's executed well through writing! But I agree that stories with a gripping plot are perfect for moments when you just want to escape and have fun, but if the writing comes across as very juvenile, it just frustrates me 🥲 Though I have to admit there are times that I will eat up a badly written book just because it's so entertaining and easy to devour, even despite the occasional cringe.
