eine grammatische anmerkung:
"We had had to bear the ‘clarity of displacement’ and now we had to bear the ‘uncertainty of return’ as well."

"aspekt" ist ein merkmal von verben das ich bis vor Kurzem noch nicht kannte weil es das im deutschen nicht so richtig gibt: ist die Handlung abgeschlossen?
im englischen kann man das ausdrücken und dadurch kommt "had had to" zustande und dann "had to" für den neuen zustand
