Arthur Dent's house gets demolished to make way for a bypass. Similarly, the Earth gets obliterated by the Vogon race to make way for an intergalactic expressway. Every person from earth is dead except for Arthur himself, due to his alien friend (who was stranded on earth for 15 years) being a galactic hitchhiker.
