I'll be honest, I thought I was much farther through than I am. These long books have the luxury of details in which to embellish the setting, but sometimes they feel unnecessary. Sometimes.

At this point in the book I am meeting Anna Karenina through the eyes of Kitty who has "fallen in love" with her. But the veil is quickly falling as Kitty notices something between Anna and Vronksky

Vronsky's attitude towards Kitty lends me to pity Levin more than Kitty. Kitty recognises that she has contributed to Levin's unhappiness, similarly to Oblonsky who realises the suffering he has caused his wife only afterwards.

It's written in third person but focusses primarily on Stiva. Consequently we hear more of his thoughts, and are able to sympathise more easily than other characters, including his wife, Dolly, who has been cheated on. We see Dolly through Stiva's eyes - strong yet fragile, not beautiful.

Entering in with a character having just had the affair means that we do not get the shock which may be associated with growing to love a character and then learning of the affair. However, the good impressions that other characters have of the person lend themselves to contribute to a positive image of Stiva.
