Reminiscent of Pachinko, this historical fiction by Hwang Jungeun is not just a record of the lives of the women of the family, but also a wonderfully written tale that weaved the personal and political with depth. I really enjoyed this tragic novel and would definitely recommend it!

Finished! Years and Years is an amazing portrait of several women in a family who toiled and worked and struggled through patriarchy, war, poverty, grief, their lives part of the bigger history and politics of South Korea. A remarkably poignant read, Years and Years is an emotional rollercoaster from the start to finish. It was tragic, it was heartwarming...it was everything and more.

damn...sunil's life is so full of suffering ☹️ AND THAT ENDINGGG

"But Sunil knew there were things Yeongjin would never say.
She believed it was because Yeongjin could never forgive her. And that's why I won't bring up what that child won't say.
Sunil knew that some things in life could never be forgiven."

Every word and sentence Hwang chose is there intentionally; emotions and thoughts that reside in the characters' minds are portrayed through her subtle, quiet writing. Just like her book One Hundred Shadows, Years and Years is a tale that slowly unfolds itself, like a butterfly's metamorphosis, silent yet gradual. I'm only a quarter into the book, but I already know I would love this one.
