I find it really amusing that the author quotes Joan Didion's The White Album given that I tried to pick that up before this book.

Also, I really appreciate the section analyzing female masochism. Very thoughtful.

If this was a straight memoir of a dysfunctional childhood and adolescence, I probably would have stopped reading a long time ago. Weaving horror films that helped the author process her past is what makes it.

Apparently white lady memoirs, especially about histories of abuse and trauma, are fine if the author is processing them through the lens of horror cinema. Granted, I loved "It Came from Out of the Closet" which was just essays doing that.
