"She was a somewhat fierce but smiling lady, with keen grey eyes full of courage, and a face tanned by the wind; her cheeks were a rosy brown and her smile most winning."

Have a feeling this lady's gonna be awesome.

"'Really Kay!' she said having read the letter, 'I forbid you to mention the words 'quite well!' in any other letter that you write. You learn a phrase and then you repeat it just like a little parrot."

One of the fun bits of reading old children's books is learning what was considered slang back in the day 😂

Neil R. Coulter Such a great book! I hope you'll continue right on to The Box of Delights when you finish this one.

Dominika Yes! I actually read that one first and was blown away by it and now I'm finally getting to this one. Masefield is so marvelously inventive!

I don't know why he isn't better known today for his children's fantasy books. They're so good! One of his books includes a painting on the wall that comes to life, and I always wonder if Lewis was thinking of that when he wrote the opening of Dawn Treader.

Dominika It really is a crying shame he isn't more widely read. And yes, I think in both this one and Box of Delights there's a picture that comes to life. I wouldn't be surprised if Lewis was inspired by it. He certainly read Masefield. There's a blurb from him on the back of my copy of Box of Delights!
