Action is starting to rise as the two boys, Austin and Robby, encounter the first mutant mantis that hatches out of a dead body. The two boys and Shann enter the silo, later to find the secrets about Shann's uncle's secrets.

Austin and Shann watches a movie, while Robby folds his laundry. After the two couple finishes the film, they head out their ways. The morning after, Shann calls Austin about a constant type-writer typing inside his room. The two boys investigate the mystery and they find an actual type writer that had printed an unknown mysterious document.

Austin and Robby secretly heads to a consignment store.They were trying to find out what her father was hiding in his personal storage. His store, "From Attic To Seller", was filled with different types of experiments that had gone wrong. Then, a couple of boys that had beaten up Robby and Austin came in and took a couple of the experiments. Grant Wallace dropped a blue glowing containing a virus strand.

Grasshopper Jungle starts the reader with the two main characters, Austin Szerba and Robby Brees. Austin is the narrator of the story and he explains how things in work in the town of Ealing, Iowa. He tells us about how the schools in Ealing aren't friendly to each other. In chapter 2, Austin and Robby visit Shan Collins after the two boys get beaten up by another couple of school boys from a different school.
