Reading this after Huntford in an effort to "balance" my picture, but it's soooo fuzzy as to details! And no less apt to infer people's emotional state, only while in Huntford's case it's from diary quotations, in Preston's case it's from nothing much, or at least she gives no direct speech to her subjects.

He was a follower of Ruskin and a decided ascetic reflected, to an extent, in his tall, lean aquiline appearance which a friend compared to that of a thoroughbred horse.
How's that?
