Joan Mitchell called her “that Kotex painter,” — I find this so interesting. Some of the first works I ever saw by Joan Mitchell were at the Holyoake Center at Harvard. The paintings had these horizontal, vaguely rectangular block forms. Not dissimilar to those in Little Fields and Blue Territory. Immediately the forms reminded me of how blood looks on a period pad… maybe insecurity creeping into criticism??
