“I need somebody to minister to the people who suffer - somebody they can trust.”
I guess the devil should’ve killed me that day in Vietnam. But like Job, the end is better than the beginning. “
“I wouldn’t trade one scar on my body. If it means I would lose my connection to kids. I look the way they feel about themselves. This is the evidence of my empathy.“

“Comparisons tend to diminish the integrity of an experience, depriving it of its legitimate status as something unique.”
“In a real sense she was afflicted with my infirmities in the depths of her soul. Her love enveloped my pain and brought gladness to me.”

“I speak a universal language. It’s the language of pain. Everyone hurts in someway.”
“It’s easy for us to try to compare suffering. To say, “no one has suffered as I have suffered”. Yes, someone has suffered as we have suffered. He is touched with the feelings of our infirmities. He touched the heart of multitude of people the world over. He speaks the language of Jesus. The language of suffering.”

So much I didn’t understand about the Vietnam war. Dave’s encounters and perspectives (what a futile way to call his experiences….) stir up so many thoughts and wonders about war. We really don’t get it.
I love Dave’s faithfulness to God and loyalty to his wife when everyone around him chose the opposite ❤️

I got to meet Dave at my church many years ago and purchased his book. I’ve never taken the time to actually open it up and read his story. I think it’s about time to let his testimony speak into my life - and I think it’s quite timely for the life I’ve been experiencing. Only 30 pages in, I see his love for God, people, his wife, and everything in between. Excited to let these rich pages overflow!
