I'm still holding out hope Etta faked it and this book didn't fall into a shitty harmful trope.

like... TO CLARIFY. The characters are engaged in a fully wonderful m/m romance. It's passionate and beautiful and hot. But on top of that. One man is married and wants to remain true to his marriage vows to take care of his wife. They have to be discreet and arrange for a secret apt and pay people to keep quiet and decide if this love is worth society (and God's) condemnation.

I really appreciate this book. I love the 1800s and love LGBT lit, but very few books actually show LGBT chars facing the times and society of that era? I really like how these characters really, truly feel like they are 19th century gay men trying to navigate the world they're in. I really, really like it.

this is very lovely and well-written. I am so very pleasantly surprised, as I picked it up as a freebie haha.
