Page 51. I’m very disappointed in this historical fiction.
It’s talking about a fire ant in Florida. From everything I’ve read fire ants invaded Florida in the 1930s. And wouldn’t have been there in 1818. I really don’t like when an author assumes something. Why not just say any, not fire ant. What else is wrong, that I won’t know enough to check.
Otherwise, I was enjoying this book.

I will finish. The characters are enjoyable. And the nature scenes are written in a personalized manner, similar to Rachel Carson’s Under the Sea Wind where Rachel gives names to each of the animals she follows. But I so wish she would’ve just said Ant- not fire ant, less is more when you don’t really know. I felt prompted to look up when fire ants came to Florida because we didn’t have any that I remembered during the 50s and 60s growing up there. They were fully established by the 1980s.
