I can't HANDLE YA parents. If I was in 1/4 of the situations the typical YA protagonist is in when I lived at home, my parents would ground me, possibly throw out my laptop, and maybe even whack me -- and prob a good like three chapters of screaming lol. You can't grow up like that and read YA.

i mean my parents were absolute trash so I just accept most YA parents as like, decently well-adjusted people? but "oh you destroyed school property, almost had arson charges filed against you, and were expelled and sent home to live with us? MEH THAT'S FINE. WE'LL JUST GRUMP AT YOU A BIT." fuck that omg.

like they pull up to her house ARRIVING HOME FROM THE SCHOOL SHE WAS JUST KICKED OUT OF and she's like "hey mom can I go visit my best friend that lives down the block" and mom's like "ok honey"

hellll noooo even a loving kind parent would lock you in your room FOR WEEKS, force you to go to school and back home and do lots of yardwork or something. LIKE.

no totally right. but i think YA is a fantasy of what that time period would be like if the teenagers created the entire planet
like just as fantastical as romance -- but i can't really get into romance either lol
