For once, I’d like to read a book about Syria that doesn’t radicalize and hate on Islam. Come on. Two chapters in and the author is already speaking condescendingly about scholars of tafsir and his religious dad.

Opened the first page and I’m fighting back tears. I will NEVER forget what Bashar Al Assad has put my Syrian brothers and sisters through. NEVER.

I see every Syrian I know and love in the words of these books

hiba ☕︎ Might be a DNF if it continues this way. What a waste of beautiful prose.

Delilah That's incredibly disappointing. Hating on Islam is popular though, and depending on who his intended audience was, could attract more positive reviews.

bin it, it's not looking too good. should've known it would have some islamophobia in it, all books about ISIS in Syria do, sigh

true :( this has pretty high ratings by non-muslims. what shocks me is the author is both syrian and muslim. however, he romanticises western ideologies and paints islam in a very untrue & strict light. i think he has a vendetta against islam because ISIS took over his hometown, Raqqa

message 7: by Umm Isa (new)

Umm Isa I encounter this in so many fictinional or autobiographical works of supposed ''Muslims'', I call it ''The Kite Runner phenomenom''.
The only book I have personally encountered that was completely free of this was ''The Thorn and The Carnation'' by Yahya Sinwar, Allah yarhamo.

hiba ☕︎ @pally loooolll I missed your tomatoes 😭🩷🌸

hiba ☕︎ @Umm Isa, I didn’t know he wrote a book, barakAllahu feeki for telling me, may Allah have mercy on his soul 🩷🌸 but yes you’re 100% right!! I used to say “never read books about conflicts in Arab/Muslim countries if it’s written by a white person” but now I realize even Arabs/Muslims themselves are demonizing Islam subhanAllah 💔
