This has already hit the bullseye for me with the understanding and description of an alcoholic mother. The whiny call from jail, the idea that everything is normal until decades later when you realize how messed up growing up like that is.

My initial reaction is that I can feel the personal views of the author coming through but then I think, maybe it's the young protagonist voice? Slightly naive and a bit misogynistic, it very well could be the voice of the young college student who is a byproduct of a rough upbringing who hates their neglectful and toxic mother (although, I'm not sure they know they hate her, yet?). Hmmm.
