Leanora Sutter's father got shot, and the authorities plan to blame the cause of his towards the KKK. The group also burned down Catholic Churches and murdered Jews and other non white ethencities. Pastor Johnny Reaves attempted to commit suicide because he was frightened by the KKK. He got branded on his back, which he says that he wanted to be back in the clan, but instead got punished.

Merlin fled out of town because everyone thought that he shot someone, but really he fled because Merlin was afraid of poured no poison on Leannora's well. He was ordered by the KKK to do so. Johnny Reaves turned out to survive after he jumped off the bridge and plummeted into the river.

The KKK is starting to cause trouble. One man got beat up and hung by the group. The clan has gotten hold of factories, houses, schools, and stores at Vermont. When Harvey Pettibone was with the clan, he went to the hotel to smash liquor because the KKK disallows alcohol.

The book starts out by introducing the main characters, and there are eleven of them. Leonora is a twelve year old girl who's African American. She later finds out about the KKK. Clergyman, Johnny Reaves joins the KKK because he dislikes other ethnic groups or other religions besides his own, which are white Christians.
