[Faust:] One word of yours, a single look
Worth all the science in our books.

[Faust:]
Happy the man, even as he conquers gloriously,
Death sets the blood-stained laurel on his brows,
Happy the man, after dancing the night through furiously,
Death finds him in a girl’s arms in a drowse.

[Faust:]
The non-stop croak, the universal chant:
You can’t have what you want, you can’t!
I awake each morning, how? Horrified,
On the verge of tears, to confront a day
Which at its close will not have satisfied
One smallest wish of mine, not one.

[Faust:]
In any clothes, I’d feel the misery
Of this cramped, suffocating life on earth.
I’m too old to live for amusement only,
Too young to wish for nothing, wait for death.

[Mephisto:] It’s an iron law we devils can’t flout,
The way we come in we’ve got to go out,
We’re free as to entrée but not as to exit.
[Faust:] So even in Hell there’s law and order!
