It is interesting to note that, so far, every history book I have read on China in the past month has described the differing aims of the CPC and the USSR. It is clear that the USSR were frightened at the prospect of an independent "socialist" state on their border. They wanted to keep China under their thumb, and if that meant a KMT government, that was fine. The CPC were seen as cautious allies of the USSR.
