The author characterizes the Native Americans as lazy and stupid, and even has them calling each other lazy and stupid. He says the nature spirits hated the Native Americans. When it came to "explaining" who/what one of the spirit characters was, the author combined Native American beliefs and European Christian beliefs to explain his existence. This is blatant misappropriation. How did readers like this book?

Hanging people upside from their ankles until they died from dehydration or exposure was not done in Colonial America. It was a Chinese form of punishment for criminals. It was used in Europe during the Middle Ages, but not until death. It was used as a precursor to other forms of torture. Again, no research. The Native American misrepresentation has continued and is even worse now. This book is trash.

Another author who doesn't research. There were no buffalo in New England, so there wouldn't be any buffalo ghosts, and goats were brought by Europeans, so there wouldn't be ancient goat spirits. The centipedes in New England are from the Mediterranean and were not seen in the US until 1849, and are not poisonous to humans. Pawpaw trees have never been endangered in New England and have yellow fall leaves, not red.

Slow and plodding; repetitive. The vocabulary for description is very simple. Nothing is sparking in my mind. I am thoroughly bored.

Also plot conveniences. She says she has to sell magical charms to make ends meet on their farm. Charms which will get her in deep trouble in their Puritan community, but talks about how they have an over abundance of quality honey. Why not sell that or the candy she makes from it?
