It is a bit like the well-known horde of monkeys hammering away on typewriters — most of what they write will be garbage, but very of any pure chance they will type out one of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Similarly, in the case of the universe, could it be that we are living in a region that just happens by chance to be smooth and uniform?

Just like a computer, we must remember things in the order in which entropy increases. This makes the second law of thermodynamics almost trivial. Disorder increases with time because we measure time in the direction in which disorder increases. You can’t have a safe about than that!

As the geodesic is the shortest path between any two airports, this is the rote an airline navigator will tell the pilot to fly along. In general relativity, bodies always follow straight lines in four-dimensional space-time, but they nevertheless appear to us move along curved paths in our three-dimensional space.
