PTSD is not signaled by a constellation of new symptoms that develop long after a stressful event but it is in many regards the maladaptive persistence of the once adaptive responses that began as coping mechanisms in response to the event itself.

Recovery from trauma requires the victim to return to a situation which is predictable and safe. Our brains are naturally pulled to make sense of trauma in a way that allows us to become tolerant to it. To mentally shift the traumatic experience to one in which we are completely helpless to which we have some mastery.
