Reed's writing style is very body-oriented, for lack of a better way to say it; bodily sensations and functions, however coarse, loom large. The contrast of the aggressions & guns of the main character against the larger, vegetarian, genetically-manipulated-to-be-less-aggressive culture is unsettling, as I assume it is meant to be. I haven't been so unsure how I feel about a main character in a long time.
