Reed's writing style is very body-oriented, for lack of a better way to say it; bodily sensations and functions, however coarse, loom large. The contrast of the aggressions & guns of the main character against the larger, vegetarian, genetically-manipulated-to-be-less-aggressive culture is unsettling, as I assume it is meant to be. I haven't been so unsure how I feel about a main character in a long time.

This has a very 1880s Wild West bone hunter/big game hunter vibe to it so far. Slightly weirded out by the cumulative discussion of killing, meat eating, saurian creatures and a genetically engineered killer but I'm not really sure why.
